You don't have to have it all figured out to start therapy. If you are navigating addiction, processing trauma, or simply trying to understand yourself better, I meet you exactly where you are.

I am a counselor licensed in Indiana, Illinois, Colorado, and Montana, with a Master's in Counseling Psychology focused on addiction treatment from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. My career has taken me through residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and private practice settings, giving me a broad and grounded perspective on what recovery and healing actually look like across different circumstances and stages of life.

I work from a client-centered, strengths-based approach, which means I believe you are the expert on your own life. My role is to collaborate with you, helping you build motivation, develop insight, and grow the coping skills that make life's challenges more manageable. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) to tailor treatment to your specific needs.

Whether you're exploring therapy for the first time or returning after a difficult season, I would be honored to be part of your journey.

Therapy is not about having the right answers. It is about having a space where you can slow down, explore what you are carrying, and start to find your way through it. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, or the stress of a major life transition, that is the kind of space I am committed to creating for every person I work with.

I am a counselor in Illinois and Colorado with a Master of Arts in Counseling with a specialization in Art Therapy from Adler University and a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts. My career has brought me experience working with culturally diverse individuals of all ages across a variety of settings, with a particular focus on emerging adults navigating life transitions.

I use an integrative approach that weaves together Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Art Therapy, and expressive techniques alongside Person-Centered and Trauma Focused Therapy. I believe that healing looks different for everyone, and I tailor my approach to meet you where you are in your journey.

My goal is to help you increase self-awareness, develop concrete tools for emotional wellness, and identify the strengths you already carry. Whatever season you find yourself in, I would be honored to walk alongside you.

Our Founder

Our Founder

Monica McCombs, LMHC, LCPC, LPC, therapist and founder of Lotus Counseling Services in Indiana, Illinois, and Colorado.

Monica McCombs, LMHC, LCPC, LPC

I started Lotus Counseling Services because I believed people deserved support before they reached a breaking point. After years working in residential, correctional, and secured settings, I saw firsthand what happens when mental health care comes too late. Lotus was built to be something different; a place where people could access quality, compassionate therapy early, before crisis takes hold.

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Indiana, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Illinois, and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Colorado, with a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Valparaiso University and a Bachelor's in Psychology and Criminal Justice from Indiana University. I have over a decade of experience working with individuals navigating some of the most difficult chapters of their lives.

My work has centered on helping individuals who struggle with the intensity of their own emotions, including depression, anxiety, anger, trauma, substance use, and the behaviors that can follow when those emotions feel unmanageable. I believe that people inherently have the tools to lead fulfilling lives, and that therapy is the process of making those tools accessible again.

At Lotus, I have built a team of skilled therapists who share that same commitment to meeting people where they are, with warmth, clinical expertise, and genuine investment in the people they serve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Choosing a therapist is a personal decision, and it's okay if it takes a little thought. A good starting point is considering what you're hoping to work on and whether any practical factors matter to you, such as insurance coverage or scheduling availability. From there, reading through our therapist bios can help you get a sense of each clinician's personality and approach. If you're still unsure, we're happy to help match you with someone we think will be a good fit. Just submit an inquiry and we'll guide you from there.

  • We currently accept Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Carelon, Quest Behavioral Health, Ascension, Aetna EAP, Cigna EAP, and CCA EAP. We also offer private pay for those who prefer not to use insurance or whose plan is not listed. If you're unsure whether we accept your insurance, feel free to include your carrier when you submit an inquiry and we'll confirm your coverage before we connect.

  • Our private pay rate is $150 per session. We believe cost should not be a barrier to getting support, so if you have questions about affordability, we encourage you to reach out. We're happy to talk through your options.

  • Availability varies by clinician, but in most cases we are able to schedule new clients within a week or less from the initial contact. Once you submit an inquiry or book directly through a clinician's calendar, we'll work to get you connected as quickly as possible.

  • Starting therapy for the first time is a big step, and it's completely normal to feel nervous or unsure about what to expect. Your first session is primarily a conversation. Your therapist will take time to get to know you, understand what brings you in, and talk through what working together might look like. There's no pressure to share more than you're ready to, and there are no wrong answers. Many of our clients had never been to therapy before coming to us, and we take pride in making that first experience feel safe and approachable.

  • Virtual therapy sessions take place over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Once you're scheduled, you'll receive a link to join your session from wherever you feel most comfortable, whether that's your home, your car, or anywhere else you have privacy and a stable internet connection. Sessions are the same length as traditional in-person appointments and follow the same therapeutic process. All you need is a device with a camera and microphone.

  • Research consistently shows that virtual therapy produces outcomes comparable to in-person care for a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and grief. For many people, the convenience and privacy of meeting remotely actually makes it easier to show up consistently, which matters a great deal for progress. Our clinicians are fully trained to provide high-quality care in a virtual setting and work to make each session feel personal and connected.
